Chimney cleaning mandatory?
In our country, there are no legal obligations regarding chimney cleaning. However, it is a job at height that requires the necessary safety restrictions. Do you want to be sure of a properly cleaned chimney and a reduced risk of chimney fire as much as possible? Then we recommend having a professional roofer from Roofers 24/7 clean your chimney. Contact us to schedule an appointment or for more information!
Safe living with a clean chimney
Although in our country it is not compulsory to have your chimney cleaned, this may be the case for home and/or contents insurance. There are several insurance companies that have included in their terms and conditions that periodic cleaning of the chimney is a requirement for insurance payment in the event of a claim. In such a case, can you not prove that the chimney was neatly periodically cleaned? Then the insurance company may choose not to pay you anything in the event of damage whether due to the chimney or not. This is a serious matter that deserves your attention!
Don’t risk the safety of you and your residents as well as your insurance and have your chimney cleaned periodically by an experienced chimney sweep (roofer).
Counteracting soot deposits in your chimney
When you fire wood in your chimney, particles are released that do not burn. These unburned particles enter the flue of the chimney and are partially discharged to the outside. Another part of these unburned particles adheres to the wall of the flue, creating soot deposits.
Having your chimney cleaned in a timely manner prevents the formation of tar or creosote. This forms a flammable, greasy layer that cannot be removed with a normal sweeping brush. When you fire wood in your chimney again, there is a danger that this layer of tar or creosote will catch fire.
Prevent soot build-up and thus a greater fire risk. Have your chimney cleaned promptly by a professional chimney sweep!
How does a chimney sweep from Roofers 24/7 work?
Your chimney can be cleaned for you using a variety of techniques. The most common methods used by our roofers are these:
Chimney cleaning from top to bottom
This method works with a ball to which a sturdy brush is attached. From the roof, the roofer ensures that the ball with brush enters the top of the chimney by means of a rope. This is moved back and forth bit by bit, both up and down and back and forth, to thoroughly scrub off stuck dirt on the inside of the chimney. This process is repeated until the bottom of the chimney is reached.
Chimney sweeping from bottom to top
With this technique, a brush is attached to an extendable stick. Piece by piece, the soot in your chimney is sanded off using this stick incl. brush. When the top of the chimney is reached, the work is complete.
Cleaning chimney with a block
There are different blocks available that should be used to clean the chimney. You place these blocks in your chimney and burn them up. The smoke and substances released should cause the soot particles and dirt in the chimney to loosen and fall down on their own.
The efficacy of these cleaning blocks has not yet been demonstrated, and our experienced roofers rigorously question whether this cleaning method is sufficient vs. actual cleaning by hand.
We recommend having a professional roofer clean your chimney at all times in addition to using these blocks. Contact our experts for more information or to schedule an appointment for chimney cleaning!
Chimney no longer in use
Does your home have a chimney but you no longer use it? Then it is not necessary to have the chimney cleaned to reduce fire risk. Wood is no longer being burned in your home, so there is no risk of soot formation or creosote.
What to watch out for when firing wood (in a chimney)?
Being mindful of your chimney and burning wood is the first step to a cleaner chimney. Below, we have listed a few points for you to consider when firing wood in your home or property:
- Fire only dry wood;
- Smoke clean and cleaved wood;
- Fire hardwood in preference to softwood, softwood contains resin which also melts;
- Do not fire too thick pieces of wood, preferably to a thickness of 15 centimeters;
- Do not fire too long pieces of wood, preferably no more than 30 centimeters;
- Do not fire too much wood at once, but start with 30% fill and add small bits of wood;
What is better to leave out when it comes to burning wood?
- Do not fire wet or moldy wood; always allow it to dry first;
- Always store firewood outside, well sheltered from rain. Wind actually makes the wood drier;
- Do not cover your stored firewood with plastic;
- Make piles of firewood from an elevation off the ground. This will prevent moisture from soaking into the firewood via the ground.
