How to recognize asbestos in your roof?
It is usually difficult to identify asbestos yourself when you are not very familiar with it yourself. We have some tips for how you can still detect asbestos in your roof yourself:
-
Production year
As of July 1, 1993, there is a ban on the use and sale of all types of asbestos in the Netherlands. Therefore, if your roof was installed earlier than this date, the roof may contain asbestos. -
Marking
Asbestos-free corrugated sheets and slates have an N or NT marking in the surface. -
Brand name
If your slates were installed between 1990 and 1996, you may want to look at the brand name. Slates from the Alterna or Stonit brands from this period are asbestos-free. Slates from Eterna, Multex, Big Ben or Country contain asbestos. For corrugated slates, unfortunately, there are no indications based on brand name. -
Appearance and texture
Corrugated asbestos sheets have a honeycomb shape in waffle texture and contain multiple layers. When you see large fibers, the likelihood of asbestos processing is high. With small fibers, the material does not contain asbestos. In asbestos-containing slates, you will see large white fibers in the fracture lines. -
Size
Small slates with an area of 40x20 centimeters or 40x24 centimeters are asbestos-containing. Larger slates with an area of 60x40, 60x32 or 45x32 are asbestos-free. For corrugated slates, unfortunately, there are no indications based on size. -
Fire test
Passing a flame along fracture lines or a fracture surface is another tactic for identifying asbestos. If the fibers continue to glow, then you are dealing with asbestos. If the fibers melt away, then you are dealing with asbestos in the corrugated iron or slate.
Is asbestos roof removal mandatory?
In the case of roofs that contain asbestos, most of them are solid or bonded asbestos. As long as the roof is in good condition, this will release few asbestos fibers. As time passes and the asbestos ages, more fibers will be released. Therefore, our advice is to have your asbestos roof removed as soon as you know that your roof contains asbestos. In view of the cost of asbestos removal and the intended tightening of laws and regulations regarding asbestos, this is the best choice in the long run.
