What is the cost of a ridge raise?
The total cost for a ridge raise can vary tremendously and depends primarily on the dimensions and material desired. Given the numerous possibilities in this regard, it is difficult to give an average price for a single-sided or double-sided ridge rise. However, we can estimate the average cost. How is a ridge rise installed?
A ridge raiser is an interesting way to increase the headroom in your loft or attic to create more (storage) space. Our roofers use a standard method for both single-sided and double-sided roof raising. Our roofers work as follows:
Step 1 - Creating space
Our roofer will accurately measure exactly where the ridge rise will be and ensure that the existing roofing and insulation material is removed.
Step 2 - Preparation of ridge elevation and additional work.
Now that space has been made for the preliminary work, the roofer can verify that the structure of the home or property is still sufficiently sturdy to support the modifications. It is often found that the supporting structure of the home requires additional support to safely and properly support the ridge rise. This additional work is performed by our roofer without any problems, that is the advantage of the all-round service of Roofers 24/7.
Step 3 - Install ridge riser
Once the existing structure is approved or supplemented with supporting materials and thus supports the adjustments, the real work can begin. In case of a prefabricated ridge rise it will be hoisted onto the roof with a crane, in case of a custom made ridge rise our roofers will start this step. Depending on the complexity of the job, this can take one or several days.
Step 4 - Finishing ridge elevation
By default, the ridge rise is delivered as shell. Our roofer ensures that the elevation is completely watertight and fitted with glass (as desired). Materials ridge elevation
There are several materials to choose from for a ridge raiser. Here we zoom in on the three most common materials and their advantages and costs. Find out the cost of your desired material in advance to avoid unexpected surprises.
The three most commonly chosen materials for a ridge rise from most economical to most costly:
A chimney is usually constructed of bricks and cement. Years of weather can, over time, make the grouting and masonry porous. If cement becomes loose, after a while the bricks also become loose. The result: a leak to your chimney.
Plastic
A commonly chosen option as a material is plastic. Plastic is very light in weight, which means no modifications are needed to the existing load-bearing structure. This is a major added benefit. In addition, plastic is easy to maintain and available in many different sizes and finishes.

Wood
Wood is still a widely used material, so too for a ridge raiser. Like plastic, wood is relatively lightweight, so in many cases no modification to the existing load-bearing structure is required. Wood does require more maintenance and should be treated thoroughly every few years to prevent wood rot.

Stone
The most expensive material for a ridge rise is stone. The beauty of a stone ridge rise is that it blends in with the rest of the house and does not show that it was added later. On the other hand, stone is a heavy material and the structure of the building must be reinforced before the work can begin.

Need a permit for a ridge increase?
A ridge elevation changes the appearance of your property. This causes it to be required in almost every municipality to apply for an environmental permit before starting such work on a property. Almost always the application for an environmental permit requires, among other things, a structural calculation. This structural calculation should be done by an experienced structural engineer and serves as proof that the construction is strong enough to carry the modifications. If the construction is not strong enough, the structural engineer will provide a structural calculation including a drawing in the construction report. This is leading in the work to make the construction solid and safe before the increase of the roof can and may take place.
Conditions permit roof raising
It is useful to be well informed about the conditions for applying for an environmental permit. You can find the most common conditions here, but please note that these conditions vary from one municipality to another. Receiving a permit for a roof increase often depends on:
- The municipality and its conditions and requirements;
- The surrounding homes and properties and their appearance;
- The type of property (listed, protected face or is this not applicable?);
- Opinions and/or objections of local residents and surrounding property owners (with regard to privacy i.e. more views into the garden, front yard etc.).

Prefabricated ridge rise
Do you want to save as much time and cost as possible, but are interested in a ridge rise? Then a prefab ridge rise may be an interesting choice for you. Prefab ridge raises are pre-assembled and come in a number of standard sizes and colors. Because such a construction is already assembled, it only needs to be placed and secured on site. This saves a considerable amount of work compared to a custom-made ridge rise. The prefabricated ridge raiser does limit the choice of sizes, colors and finishes.
Single-sided or double-sided ridge elevation?
A ridge elevation can be either single-sided or double-sided:

Single-sided ridge raising
The ridge is raised on one side of the roof. This method creates less space than a double-sided ridge rise, but is less expensive. We should add that a single-sided ridge raise often looks less attractive than the double-sided ridge raise. -
Double-sided ridge raising
The ridge is raised on two sides of the roof. More space is created than with a single-sided ridge rise. The appearance of the roof is also better with a double-sided ridge rise. On the other hand, the cost of construction is considerably higher.
