How to clean roof

When you choose to have your roof cleaned by a roofer from Roofers 24/7, you are guaranteed a professional and quality roof cleaning. All of our roofers work according to the methods listed below to clean your roof:

Step 1 - Roof inspection

Inspecting the roof is very important to ensure a safe roof cleaning process. The roofer will identify any weak spots, leakage(s) or worse damage in order to make an appropriate plan of action.

Step 2 - Preparation

Preparation(s) for roof cleaning depend on the roof inspection. Did the inspection reveal any damage to the roof? Then it is important to fix this damage locally first before the roof can be cleaned.

No damage to your roof revealed by the roof inspection? Then the preparations consist mainly of clearing any patio, clearing flower pots and shutting off the rainwater drain.

Step 3 - Cleaning the roof

Our roofer has chosen the best method of roof cleaning for your roof based on the roof inspection and preparations. The cleaning will be done professionally and carefully.

Step 4 - Roof protection

After roof cleaning, you may choose to have your roof sprayed with a disinfectant to keep it clean longer. Impregnating or coating your roof is an additional protection against contamination and has a longer effect than disinfectant.

Types of roof cleaning

There are several options when it comes to roof cleaning. Depending on the soiling of the roof, the condition of the roof and your personal requirements, the most appropriate cleaning method will be chosen. Below you can see the types of roof cleaning that Roofers 24/7 performs:

Roof cleaning & mopping

The degreasing and cleaning of your roof is possible both with and without cleaning agents. This depends in particular on the type of roofing and its condition together with the degree of soiling of the roof.

Gutter cleaning

Having your gutters cleaned can be done simultaneously when you choose to have a roof inspection, but you can also choose to have this job done on your own. Is your roof still nice and clean, but the gutters could use a cleaning? Our roofer will take care of empty and clean gutters again, so that the rainwater runoff is efficient again.

Additional protection: coating or impregnation

To keep your roof clean longer and better protected from mosses, you can choose to have your roof coated or impregnated after cleaning.

Impregnating your roof: A transparent moisture and dirt repellent is applied to the cleaned roof.

Coating your roof: A colored moisture and dirt repellent is applied to the cleaned roof. This achieves a completely different look to your roof in addition to extended roof protection.

Roof cleaning and different types of roofing

It goes without saying that each type of roofing requires a different type of care. The roofers at Roofers 24/7 are highly experienced in cleaning all types of roofing and will do this intensive job for you. How do we do it? You can read about the corresponding cleaning for each type of roofing here.

Cleaning roof tiles

Roof tiles generally require little maintenance, but some work is necessary to maximize their life and function. Your roof tiles will have to contend with all types of weather conditions, and eventually the tiles will require cleaning. Depending on the finish of the tiles (coating or not?), it is recommended to have roof tiles cleaned at least every 5 to 10 years. You can do this job yourself using a pressure washer, but for best results, have an experienced and professional roofer do it.

Slate roof cleaning

A slate roof requires a little more maintenance than, say, a tile roof. A coating is applied to the slates to protect against moisture, dirt, mosses and algae. With exposure to different weather conditions and wear and tear, the coating is damaged and the slates will become more susceptible to absorbing moisture. Consequently, slates become an ideal substrate for growth of algae and mosses. This unwanted green growth should be cleaned using a pressure washer and moss killer. Therefore, it is smart to have this done by an experienced roofer who will do the cleaning efficiently and professionally for you.

Bitumen roof cleaning

Moss and algae can often be removed with a hard broom. When this is not sufficient, we work with a pressure washer and water. Bitumen roofing is sensitive to chemicals, which is why we pertinently do not use them in the case of bitumen.

Cleaning thatched roof

When maintenance on a thatched roof is not done in a timely manner, algae and mosses have a chance to grow on the thatch. This causes the thatch to stay wet longer after wet weather conditions, causing the thatch to soften. Soft thatch reduces its protection from weather conditions, this is called chipping. When this happens, leaks or even damage to your roof structure can eventually occur.

Maintaining a thatched roof can include:

  • Algae removal
Our experts recommend having algae removed every two years.
  • Moss removal
It is also best to have moss removal done every two years.
  • Thatched roof combing
A thin layer of the thatched roof is removed, automatically existing algae and mosses also disappear with this. This technique is usually necessary when there is overdue maintenance.

Cost of roof cleaning

The average price for having your roof cleaned depends on the area to be cleaned, the amount of dirt and moss growth, and the type of cleaning product used. Below is a table showing the average prices for cleaning and/or defogging your roof.
