Why daub a roof?
Moss formation and contamination of the roof prevent the roof from working optimally. Moss makes the roofing porous and therefore vulnerable to damage resulting in leakage(s). The main reason for removing moss from your roof is to prevent damage to your roof (or worse).
Benefits of deodorizing your roof:
-
Less chance of leaks
Having your roof cleaned and defogged ensures that rainwater is better drained and there is significantly less chance of damage from leaks; -
Reduce damage from frost
In sub-zero temperatures, the moisture in mosses will freeze. Freezing and then thawing the mosses on your roof can cause damage to your roof covering. Indirectly, frost also causes leaks; -
Appearance building
By having your roof(s) cleaned periodically, you achieve a neat and clean appearance of your home or (office) building. It is nice when your building looks well maintained.
Roofing costs
First of all, it is important to mention that defoaming your roof is almost only possible in combination with cleaning your roof. This may sound the same to you, but we think it is important to explain this briefly. With the cleaning of your roof, the basis is laid for defogging. The cleaning causes the mosses to soften, making it easier to de-moss the roof. So a roof cleaning is almost always combined with defogging and vice versa.
The average price for having your roof cleaned depends on the area to be cleaned, the amount of dirt and moss growth, and the type of cleaning product used. Below is a table showing the average prices for cleaning and/or defogging your roof. We charge per m² here, so you can calculate for yourself what your average cost will be.
Type dakreiniging | Kosten per m² (excl. btw, incl. arbeidskosten) |
---|---|
Dak reinigen + ontmossen | € 8 – € 15 |
Dak reinigen + ontmossen en impregneren | € 15 – € 30 |
Dak reinigen + ontmossen en coaten | € 30 – € 40 |

Roadmap for roofing
Having your roof doused by the specialists at Roofers 24/7 follows a set step-by-step plan. This way, you know exactly what our roofers will do to bring your roof back to its optimal condition.
The step-by-step plan for daubing your roof by Roofers 24/7:
Step 1 - Roof inspection
Inspecting the roof is very important to ensure a safe roof cleaning process. The roofer will identify any weak spots, leakage(s) or worse damage in order to make an appropriate plan of action.
Step 2 - Preparation
The preparation(s) for daubing depend on the roof inspection. Did the inspection reveal any damage to the roof? Then it is important to fix this damage locally first before the roof can be cleaned and de-mossed.
No damage to your roof revealed by the roof inspection? Then the preparations mainly consist of clearing any patio, clearing flower pots and shutting off the rainwater drain. Closing the stormwater drain prevents unnecessary contamination and possible clogging of the cistern.
Step 3 - Clean the roof and remove mosses
Then we come to cleaning the roof and getting rid of mosses and any other vegetation. Depending on the type of roofing, the condition of the roofing and your personal requirements, the roof can be treated with or without a cleaning agent. You can read how this works here:
-
Roof defogging without cleaners
Our specialist cleans and de-mosses your roof with a high-pressure cleaner in combination with a dirt cutter. A dirt cutter is a rotating brush which facilitates the removal of moss and dirt. -
Roof defogging with cleaning agents
The roof is also cleaned as in the above method, but with an additional addition. A cleaning agent is sprayed on the roof and given time to take effect. Depending on the type of agent, this can be one to and including several hours. After the soaking time, the roof is cleaned again.
Roof impregnation or coating?
To keep your roof clean longer and provide extra protection from mosses and other outside influences, you can choose to have your roof coated or impregnated after cleaning. We’ll tell you what the difference between these two additional protection components is.
Coating or impregnating (hydrophobizing)?
Impregnating your roof: A transparent moisture and dirt repellent is applied to the cleaned roof.
Coating your roof: A colored moisture and dirt repellent is applied to the cleaned roof. This achieves a completely different look to your roof in addition to extended roof protection.
The best choice for post-treatment of your roof depends on the condition of your roof, the type of roofing and your personal requirements. Our professionals will review the best options with you. Need more information? Contact an experienced roofer from Roofers 24/7.
How often to have your roof deodorized?
Maintaining your roof is important to maximize its longevity and efficacy. Having your roof de-mossed is important recurring maintenance. How often your roof should be de-mossed and cleaned depends on several factors, which we will go over with you below.
Type of roofing
Roofing materials with porous surfaces are more susceptible to moss overgrowth than roofing materials with a smooth texture. The rougher the roofing material, the more often defoaming is required.
Location of the roof
The environment of the roof also affects how much cleaning and defoiling is needed. Is the roof shaded under trees or near vegetation? This is an ideal nesting site for mosses. Does the roof catch a lot of wind and/or sunlight? Then these weather conditions provide the nice bonus that mosses have little or no opportunity to grow.
Slope of the roof
On a sloped roof, mosses do not get as good a chance to grow as on flat roofs. Thus, flat roofs or roofs with small slopes are more susceptible to moss formation.
Age and condition of roofing
Roofing becomes more porous over time due to weathering and aging. Given the susceptibility of porous roofing to moss growth, our experts recommend having a roof inspection at least once every three years if your roofing is 10 years or older.
Thatched roofing
When maintenance on a thatched roof is not done in a timely manner, algae and mosses have a chance to grow on the thatch. This causes the thatch to stay wet longer after wet weather conditions, causing the thatch to soften. Soft thatch reduces its protection from weather conditions, this is called chipping. When this happens, leaks or even damage to your roof structure can eventually occur.
Maintaining a thatched roof can include:
-
Algae removal
Our experts recommend having algae removed every two years. -
Moss removal
It is also best to have moss removal done every two years. -
Thatched roof combing
A thin layer of the thatched roof is removed, automatically existing algae and mosses also disappear with this. This technique is usually necessary when there is overdue maintenance.
