What is a purlin roof?

A purlin roof is also called a twill roof and is a type of support structure that can be used with pitched roofs. The structure of the roof consists of purlins and rafters.

The purlins of the roof are wooden beams or girders installed longitudinally on the roof or roof, with the two short sides parallel to the roof plane to be supported. The purlins are anchored to the load-bearing walls. The rafters lie on the purlins and run vertically down from the ridge of the roof.

Not the same as a truss roof

A purlin roof is different from a truss roof, although a truss roof is often used as an alternative to a purlin roof. A truss roof is made up of rafters that run vertically from the bottom up to the ridge of the roof. Here they meet on either side at the crossbeam. A rafter roof has its own advantages and disadvantages compared to a purlin roof. Would you like more information or would you like someone to think along with you about the possibilities? Building a purlin roof by the experts at Roofers 24/7

A purlin roof is a fairly old type of support structure and therefore has a specialized method of construction. The experts at Roofers 24/7 build a purlin roof in the following order:

Step 1 - Roof construction

The rafters and purlins are attached directly to the wall plates and together form the framework of the load-bearing roof structure. The purlins are placed horizontally to accommodate much of the roof weight and the rafters run vertically from the ridge.

Step 2 - Insulation layer

It is recommended to have your purlin roof insulated, especially if the space under the roof is used as additional living and/or living space. We recommend having your roof insulated anyway, because no one likes to pay more energy costs than necessary. Depending on the insulation method chosen, this step involves placing the insulation material. This can be done under the roof (along the inside) or outside the roof (along the outside).

Step 3 - Shelter

An under-roof acts as a protective layer between the insulation material and the roofing material, usually a type of foil or under-roof sheets.

Step 4 - Roofing

The roof is now almost finished and only needs to be covered with the roofing material of your choice. Almost all types of roofing are possible on a purlin roof. We are happy to inform you about the possibilities.

Insulating roof purlins

We absolutely recommend insulating your roof. It is cost effective, sustainable and an investment that increases the value of your home. Plenty of reasons to have your purlin roof insulated. But how do we do it? This can be done according to two different methods about which you can read more here.

Option 1: Purlin roof insulation from the inside

Having the roof insulated from the inside means that the insulation comes under the roof ín the property. This can be done in two different ways:

Option 2: Purlin roof insulation from the outside

Insulating a purlin roof can also be done from the outside, also called a sarking roof. The plastic insulation spots are placed on top of the roof covering. Thus, in addition to insulation, these also provide additional protection to the roofing material by blocking moisture and dirt.
